8 Tips to Improve Your 2014 Job Search

Ensure Your Resume Is Up-To-Date and Appealing
Keeping your resume up-to-date is very important. Since you never know when you will need to use it, set a calendar reminder to review it once a month. If anything new comes up, add it. Additionally, with creative resumes on the rise, find ways to stay competitive by utilizing unconventional methods. If that won’t work for you or the type of job you’re looking for, use templates and Microsoft Word to make an attractive resume that shows your personality to hiring managers.
Make Your Cover Letter Stand Out
The first thing hiring managers will read is your cover letter. Make sure yours is attention-grabbing, genuine, insightful and, most importantly, conveys why you’re the right person for the job.
Keep Track Of Your Jobs Using A Spreadsheet
Ever wonder if you’ve applied to the same job multiple times? A simple and effective way to keep track of everything is to organize the info in an excel spreadsheet. From there you can track where or how you applied, what details you sent, any important names you have (like the hiring manager’s), the date you applied, and the date you made a follow-up call. It’ll also be a major benefit if you receive an unexpected phone call from a hiring manager and need to quickly trigger your memory regarding their available position.
Be Prompt In Sending Thank You Notes To Employers
In today’s competitive landscape for job seekers, sending a thank you note is a must. The sooner you get a note in the mailbox, the better. If you know they’re making a decision by the end of that day, there’s nothing wrong with a thank you email; however, the warmth and personalization of a handwritten note always stands out more. Make the effort. Take the time. Write a note.
Wear Appropriate Attire To The Interview
Make sure you’re dressed to impress. A good pair of slacks or a pencil skirt, button up shirt and blazer are essential items to have in your closet for an interview. In a more casual atmosphere, there are two ways of thinking: Either dress to fit in with their team with a nice pair of khakis and dress shirt or dress above the climate they’re used to in order to show that you mean business and want the job. Ultimately, do what works for you and shows you’re the qualified candidate they should hire. For outfit ideas, check out our Pinterest page.
Do Research On The Company and Position Before The Interview
Just like buying a car or a house, you have to do your research. It’ll help you understand what the company does, you’ll inevitably find feedback about working for the company from employees, and — most importantly — you’ll sound knowledgeable during your interview. As you’re researching, write down interesting facts, questions you have and names of important people within the company who you should know about.
Make Sure Your Social Media Presence Is Professional
Are you on social media? Employers are using sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn & Google+ to understand applicants better. If you have pictures of you drinking, partying or doing anything inappropriate, either delete the images or change your settings to render everything private.
Network. Network. Network.
Regardless of whether or not you have a job or are looking for a job, it’s always a great idea to network. Join and be active within local and online groups that are tailored to your work and career goals. Learn from others’ experience and wisdom, and pass along some of your own. Show people within your group that, not only are you teachable, but you’re also becoming (or already are) an expert in your field. Get your name and skills out there so that, should an opportunity arise, you’ll be at the forefront of someone’s mind for the position.

6 Tips For When Your Unemployment Benefits Expire

Posted on January 20, 2014Elizabeth Mandler
Unemployment BenefitsLosing your job can be a stressful time. If you were one of the 1.3 million Americans whose unemployment benefits expired at the 26-week mark, things just got a whole lot trickier. With the Senate not expected to pass legislation to reinstate extended benefits until late January or early February of 2014, there are a few things you can do to ease the stress.
1. Double-check your unemployment paperwork.
Be sure to double-check your Emergency Unemployment Compensation program documents to see if and when you’ll be affected by Congress’s ruling. This will also keep you informed if they reach an agreement in the upcoming weeks, and it will help you better prepare your monthly budgets.
2. Create a new budget.
Creating a budget is a great way to help you get the most bang for your buck when it comes to paying for life. Make a list of the items that are necessities such as rent, water and other utilities, and food. Then list all your other monthly payments. Set money aside to ensure you can pay the necessities first before you add up your other expenses. If, after looking at both lists of payments, you’re struggling to make ends meet, start cutting out some of the unnecessary monthly bills. For example: cable, internet, gaming subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, or even an unnecessary vehicle payment can be either cancelled or sold. Put your monthly income where you need it most and instead utilize the public library or other community buildings for internet and entertainment. These seemingly little expenses add up significantly, and they can always become a part of your life again once you land a job. If you didn’t already have it, think of this as extra motivation to work your hardest at finding a job!
3. Utilize coupons and become a savvy shopper.
The average person spends approximately $55 a week on groceries. To make your budget go further, try utilizing coupons you’ve received in the mail and ones you can easily print online. Also check out your grocery store’s deals and specials each week. Try combining coupons with the store’s specials, and get creative at putting together your weekly meal plan. Some grocery stores will even double or triple manufacturer’s coupons at checkout! Make a game of grocery shopping to try saving more and more with each trip. You and your family will love the meal variety, and your wallet will most certainly thank you for the break in spending!
4. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Getting sick or having a medical problem while employed can be a headache. Getting sick while you’re unemployed is even worse. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet to avoid any unexpected trips to the doctor.
5. Check out various assistance programs.
There are many local, state and national programs that provide assistance to those in need. Please try to avoid letting your pride get in the way of asking for help. It’s a trap anyone can fall into, but these programs are made to help people just like you and me. If you need assistance, here are a few programs you may find helpful; the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Food Banks, local church programs, WIC, prevention and emergency assistance programs.
6. Keep up your job search, and don’t get discouraged.
Even when times seem to be at their toughest, you should still stay motivated to find employment. Check out local newspapers and websites, and talk to people about opportunities in your area. Your hard work will pay off! For tips about applying and interviewing for jobs, make sure you stay up-to-date withEmploymentGuide.com’s blog, and be sure to keep checking out your local job listings on our site, as well!

Best And Worst Places For Job Growth

Texas Gov. Rick Perry touted the “Texas miracle” during his unsuccessful campaign for the 2012 presidential election. No income  tax, a lax regulatory government and a pro-business government and court system helped Texas generate 37% of all new jobs in the U.S. between 2009 and when Perry announced his run for President in August 2011. Perry announced last month that he would not seek a fourth term as Governor in the 2014 Texas election, but the Texas miracle shows no signs of slowing down.
The graphic below looks at the metro areas, among the 200 largest by population, that are expected to have the fastest and slowest rates of employment growth through 2015, according to research firm Moody’s Analytics. Texas dominates with seven of the top 10 spots led by Austin, which Moody’s forecasts 4% annual job growth.

6 Ways To Prepare For Unexpected Financial Events

In a relatively short period of time, Americans have seen a collapse of housing prices, the near-collapse of the banking system, double-digit unemployment and various boom-and-bust cycles in financial markets. You may not know what’s coming next, but bad news shouldn’t exactly come as a surprise anymore. You can’t protect against everything, but there are steps you can take to be better prepared to react when surprises threaten to impact your personal finances.

Here are six things you can do to be prepared:

Draw up an investment wish list. Suppose the stock market fell to half its current level tomorrow — what stocks would you most like to own at drastically discounted prices? After all, Apple AAPL -1.1%, Google GOOG -0.83% and other standout companies don’t come cheap. Chances to buy them at reasonable prices are rare and fleeting. For example, the S&P 500 hit bottom in early 2009 after the financial crisis, but by the end of that year it had bounced back by 50 percent. You can prepare for sudden price drops by making a list of what stocks you’d most like to own, and what you would be willing to pay for them.
Be equally ready to sell. Just as you should be prepared to snap up buying opportunities, you have to be ready to sell when the time is right. When you first buy a stock, you should have some plan for what price you would sell the stock for, or under what conditions.

Build an emergency fund. Separate from your retirement fund or any other savings earmarked for a specific goal, you should have an emergency fund — typically, a high-yield savings account or similarly safe and accessible vehicle that could provide you with about six months worth of living expenses in a pinch.

Create a certificate of deposit rollover schedule. Have your calendar give you a reminder a couple weeks before your CDs are due to mature, so you can make an informed decision about what length CD you want next, and take the time to shop for the best CD rates.

Do a phantom job search. Unless you have built up a substantial portfolio of investments, your career may be your most valuable asset simply because of its ongoing earning power. You should manage your career actively, as you would an investment. Without actually applying for anything, you can do a phantom job search in which you look at the job market to see how many openings are out there that you’d be qualified for, and what they pay. Strong demand for your skills could strengthen your negotiating position at your current employer, while weak demand may remind you to go the extra mile to make sure you are valued.

Update your training. A phantom job search can also tell you if your training is out-of-date. If so, don’t wait until you’re out of a job to improve your credentials. Doing it now could improve your performance in your current job, and make you immediately competitive if you have to re-enter the job market.

In addition to helping you weather emergencies, these steps may also help you do better if financial conditions go smoothly — which may be the biggest surprise of all.
